The Free State climate is characterised by hot summers and cold winters. The eastern areas of the province experience snowfalls on the higher ranges whilst the west is extremely hot in summer. Most of the precipitation in the Free State province falls in summer with aridity found towards the west, whilst Harrismith, Bethlehem and Ficksburg and the surrounding areas are well watered.
