The Free State province of South Africa situated on boundless plains in the centre of South Africa. Known as South Africa's breadbasket, Free State has more than 30,000 farms, which produce over 70% of the country's grain. The rich soil and pleasant climate provide a thriving agricultural industry. The province is almost 1,000 metres above sea level, with the Maluti and Drakensberg Mountains foothills raising the terrain to over 2000 m in the east. Mineral deposits, with gold and diamonds being of particular importance, are typically found in the north and west of the Free State province. The province lies in the Karoo Sequence of rocks, mudstones, shales, sandstones and the Drakensberg Basalt forming the youngest capping rocks.
