The Limpopo Province is a typical developing area, exporting primary products and importing manufactured goods and services.

The bushveld region of the Limpopo Province is cattle country. Extensive ranching operations are often supplemented by controlled hunting, with 80% of South Africa's hunting industry found in the province. Peanuts, cotton, maize and sunflowers are cultivated in the Modimolle and Bela-Bela areas of the Limpopo Province. Modimolle also produces table-grape crops.

Tropical fruit, such as litchis, pineapples, bananas, pawpaws and mangos, as well as a variety of nuts, are grown in the Makhado and Tzaneen areas. Tzaneen also has extensive tea and coffee plantations.

Limpopo's rich mineral deposits include iron ore, platinum group metals, chromium, diamonds, high- and middle-grade cooking coal, antimony, copper and phosphate. Mineral reserves like gold, emeralds, scheelite, magnetite, vermiculite, silicon and mica are also mined here. Base commodities such as corundum, feldspar and black granite are also found. A fifth of the provincial economy is contributed by mining.
