The Lowveld region of Mpumalanga is subtropical due to its proximity to the Indian Ocean and latitude.The Highveld region of Mpumalanga is comparatively much cooler, due to its elevation above sea level.The province is relatively well-watered by summer thunderstorms with the Drakensberg Escarpment receiving the most precipitation. The Highveld region often experiences severe frost, with the Lowveld being generally frost-free. Winter rainfall is rare, apart from some drizzle on the escarpment.
