Western Cape Economy

The Western Cape's has the third-highest GDP contribution to the country’s total, at 14.6%. The largest industry is the textile and clothing industry, which employs over 170,000 people. The textile industry is currently declining in importance, due to competition with cheaper Eastern producers. International call centres, High-tech industries, fashion design,  TV production and advertising are niche industries rapidly gaining in importance. The province also has a significantly lower unemployment rate than the other provinces.

The province has recently grown a large tourism industry. The majority of international tourist arrivals visiting Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route. There were 1,535,903 international arrivals in 2004 with continued growth annually.
