Rooiberg is a small town situated between Thabazimbi and Bela Bela in the Limpopo Province. It was once the residence of employees of the Rooiberg Tin Mining Company. When the mine closed in the early 1990’s the town became deserted and was well on its way to becoming a ghost town.
Fortunately a consortium bought it and started selling the mine houses to private buyers. The mine single quarters have been converted into a retirement village, the mine offices are now a school and the mine recreation centre is a small hotel with facilities that are still available to the village.
In spite of the gentrification taking place you will still see the occasional donkey cart being driven around the town. And if you listen carefully you may hear the cry of jackals and the roar of lions early in the morning or at night.
Although the town enjoys a rural setting, it has an infrastructure to meet the most basic requirements. Nearby you will find access to a number of game reserves.
