Before the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910, the Western Cape was referred to as the Cape Colony. After 1910 and prior to 1994, the Western Cape area was part of an extended Cape Province which included the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Western Cape and North West regions.
With one of the fastest growing economies in South Africa, the Western Cape is already the second largest contributor to the country’s total GDP. The province has some of the most highly educated residents and skilled work force in Africa. It also has the highest high school and university graduation rate in South Africa. The Western Cape is home to three world class universities with the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University and the University of the Western Cape. When it comes to the employment rate, the Western Cape is once again lower than the national average.
The financial, business services and real estate sectors are the biggest sectors in the Western Cape. Other industries that are rapidly gaining importance in the province include high tech industries, international call centers, fashion design, advertising and television production.
Western Cape’s network of highways does not have to take a back seat to any country in the world. All the main roads are tarred, and the major gravel roads are well maintained. The telecommunication network is highly sophisticated, and landlines are readily available. Most areas have access to ADSL and other high speed internet services.
Cape Town is the capital of the Western Cape and the most entrepreneurial city in South Africa. The city is the second most populated city in South Africa. It is the seat of the National Parliament and also the legislative capital of the country. One of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, Cape Town is famous for its harbor, natural settings and landmarks such as Table Mountain and Cape Point.
